Sri Lanka, also known as Ceylon, is a teardrop-shaped island in the Indian Ocean, full of cultural diversity, lush landscapes and a fascinating history. On this 12-day trip, I visited fascinating places such as Colombothe commercial capital, Ratnapurathe city of gems, the Sinharaja Foresta biodiversity sanctuary, Ellawith its mountains and tea plantations, Yalafamous for its safaris and wildlife, and Gallethe historic city on the south coast.
This itinerary was just the beginning. Cities such as Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Trincomalee or Jaffna will remain for the next adventure, because Sri Lanka always has more to offer visitors. Or it wouldn't be for its slogan "You'll come back for more". Here I share an itinerary based on my experiences and some useful tips for those who want to visit this destination.

Sri Lanka is an island located in the Indian Ocean, south of India, with a strategic position along ancient trade routes. Sri Lanka is accessible by several international air routes.

Location of Places Visited in Sri Lanka
Colombo
Region: West.
Description: Sri Lanka's commercial capital, located on the west coast, is the main gateway to the country. This city combines a mix of modernity and tradition, with modern skyscrapers contrasting with historic temples, local markets and colonial neighborhoods. Colombo offers a rich cultural experience, with gastronomic options ranging from street food to luxury restaurants. It is also an excellent starting point for exploring the rest of the country, thanks to its proximity to the main international airport and its transportation infrastructure.

Ratnapura
Region: Center-south.
Description: Known as the "City of Gems", Ratnapura is located in Sabaragamuwa province and stands out for its long history of mining precious stones, including sapphires and rubies. This picturesque town is surrounded by mountainous landscapes, lush rainforests and serene rivers, making it a perfect destination for nature lovers. In addition to the gem mines, Ratnapura offers historical temples, such as the Maha Saman Devalaya, and is a gateway to explore unique biodiversity sites, such as the Sinharaja Forest Reserve.
Sinharaja Forest Reserve
Region: Southwest.
Description: A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Sinharaja Forest Reserve is a rainforest of rare beauty and ecological importance, located near Ratnapura. Known for its rich and endemic biodiversity, it is home to countless species of plants, birds, mammals and insects found nowhere else in the world. This reserve is a paradise for nature and ecotourism lovers, with lush trails that cross crystal-clear streams and dense tropical vegetation. A visit to Sinharaja offers a unique experience of connecting with nature in one of Sri Lanka's most precious ecosystems.
Ella
Region: Central Plateau.
Description: A charming town in the hills of Sri Lanka, Ella is known for its stunning mountain scenery, lush green valleys and tea plantations that stretch as far as the eye can see. This destination is a favorite among travelers looking for tranquility, adventure and panoramic views. Among the most famous attractions are Little Adam's Peak, which offers an accessible hike with spectacular views, and the Nine Arches Bridge, a historic railway bridge surrounded by rainforest. Ella is also the perfect place to explore Sri Lanka's rural lifestyle, sample local teas and relax in the middle of nature.
Yala
Region: Southeast.
Description: Yala is home to the famous Yala National Park, one of Sri Lanka's most iconic wildlife destinations. Renowned for the largest concentration of leopards in the world, this park offers exciting safaris where visitors can observe elephants, sloth bears, exotic birds and an impressive diversity of fauna and flora. In addition to the wildlife, Yala is known for its unique landscapes combining forests, lagoons and unspoiled beaches. It is an unmissable destination for nature and adventure lovers, offering an authentic experience of connecting with wildlife in one of the country's richest protected areas.
Galle
Region: South.
Description: Galle is a charming and historic coastal town, renowned for the emblematic Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Originally built by the Portuguese in the 16th century and later expanded by the Dutch, this fort is an impressive example of colonial architecture and multicultural history. The fort's streets are lined with restored colonial buildings, charming cafés, boutiques and art galleries. In addition to its rich history, Galle offers easy access to some of Sri Lanka's most beautiful beaches, such as Unawatuna and Jungle Beach, perfect for relaxing or snorkeling. It's a perfect blend of history, culture and natural beauty.

The places I visited are distributed between the center, o south, o southwest and southeast Sri Lanka, covering a combination of:
- Coastal cities: Colombo and Galle.
- Mountainous areas: Ella and Ratnapura.
- Nature reserves: Sinharaja Forest and Yala.

Day 1-2: Colombo
Arrival: Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB).

Practical Tips for Visiting Sri Lanka

- Sri Lanka requires a visa for tourists, which can be obtained easily through the ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization) system. You can apply online before your trip and the process is quick. The tourist visa is usually valid for 30 days, with the possibility of an extension. For more information and to apply for a visa, visit the official website www.eta.gov.lk.
Health
- Avoid drinking tap water: opts for bottled water.
- Use repellent: to protect yourself from insects.
- Take out travel insurance: for medical emergencies (you can explore options such as Heymondo).
- Traveler consultationIt is recommended to visit a traveler's clinic before departure to assess the need for vaccinations, such as typhoid fever, hepatitis A and B, or other precautions depending on the areas visited. It is also important to take a good insect repellent to avoid mosquito bites, especially in rural or forest areas.
Planning and Transportation
- Use local tuk-tuks: They are the most practical and economical way to get around. Negotiate the price before you get in or opt for metered services like "PickMe" or "Uber“.
- Use the train: Especially on the route between Ella and Colombo, for a unique experience.
- Avoid rush hours: Traffic in some Sri Lankan cities can be chaotic, especially between 7am and 9am and between 5pm and 7pm.
Culture and Etiquette
- Dress modestly in religious places: Take a scarf to cover your shoulders and knees.
- Respects local traditions: He greets people with a smile and a slight nod.
- Don't take selfies with Buddha statues: It's considered disrespectful (because you have your back to the Buddha statue)
Money
- Local Currency - Sri Lanka's local currency is the Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR). Here are some practical tips on how to handle money during your trip:
- Symbol: Rs or LKR
- Exchange rate: The rate varies, but on average 1 Euro is equivalent to around 350-400 LKR (check the current rate before you travel).
- Notes available: 20, 50, 100, 500, 1000, 2000 and 5000 LKR.
- Coins: They are less commonly used, but include values such as 1, 2, 5 and 10 LKR.
- Where to exchange money
- Airport: There are several reliable bureaux de change at Bandaranaike International Airport. Rates are usually competitive.
- Banks: Banks such as Commercial Bank, Sampath Bank or Hatton National Bank are safe for exchanging money.
- Avoid exchanges in the street: They may offer less advantageous rates or involve fraud.
- Credit cards and ATMs
- Cards accepted: Cards such as Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted in hotels, restaurants and tourist stores. However, in markets or small businesses, it is preferable to use cash.
- ATMs: They are available in Colombo and the main cities. Make sure your card is activated for international withdrawals.
- Look for ATMs that say "Visa" or "Mastercard".
- Some banks may charge high fees for withdrawals abroad, so check with your bank before you travel.
- Practical money tips
- Change money gradually: Don't change everything at once; change as needed.
- Take dollars or euros: Both currencies are easily exchanged.
- Keep small notes: Many small businesses may not have change for large bills.
- Keep the exchange receipt: It may be necessary if you want to reconvert the remaining rupees.
Local Gastronomy
- Try typical dishes: Like "kottu roti", fish curry, and the traditional "hoppers" (fermented rice pancakes).
- Watch out for the spiciness: Food in Sri Lanka can be quite spicy. Ask to be served with less spice if necessary.
- Drink only bottled water: Make sure the seal on the bottle is intact.
- Taste tropical fruits: Such as jackfruit, mango and mangosteen.
- Try desserts: Like "watalappan", a coconut and spice pudding.
Security
- Avoid isolated areas at night: Especially if you're alone.
- Watch out for tourist scams: Like overpriced tuk-tuks or pushy salespeople.
- Protect yourself from the sun: Wear sunscreen and stay hydrated.

Where I stayed in Colombo
In Colombo I stayed in Cinnamon Life at City of Dreams and the hotel is magnificent. It has a privileged location for exploring the city and panoramic views of the city and the Indian Ocean.
The cuisine and the infinity pool are other great advantages of staying at this hotel. The restaurants stand out for offering traditional and international dishes, with such a wide variety that it will be impossible to try everything. Sri Lanka's tropical climate is influenced by two monsoons, which means that the best time to visit depends on the region. For the west and south, which include places like Colombo, Galle, Yala and the beaches of Bentota and Mirissa, the period between December and March is ideal, with sunshine and pleasant temperatures, perfect for enjoying the beaches and exploring the local culture. The east, with highlights such as Arugam Bay, Trincomalee and Passikudah, is more pleasant between May and September, ideal for exploring quiet beaches and areas less frequented by tourists.
