Colombo is a city that defies first impressions. At first glance, it may just seem like a chaotic metropolis, but as you explore it, you'll discover little havens of tranquillity, buildings with stories to tell and a cuisine that will win over even the most demanding palates. Between the vibrant rhythm of the markets and the serene moments in the temples, there is always something to surprise you.

By including Colombo in your itinerary, you're giving yourself the chance to see a less obvious but equally fascinating side of Sri Lanka. Whether at the beginning or the end of your trip, this city is the perfect introduction to the cultural diversity and dynamism that make the country so unique. Basically, you just have to let yourself go - Colombo will do the rest.

My advice: Forget first impressions! This city is a meeting of cultures, flavors and unique experiences.

Here's everything you can't miss on a day in Colombo!

Spending a day in Colombo, I'd say, is enough to get a general idea of the city and enjoy it before heading off to other stops in Sri Lanka. I leave you with a suggestion for a possible one-day itinerary, and other ideas of what to see and do in the colorful city.

Morning: Culture and Spirituality

  1. Visit the temples

Colombo, like the rest of Sri Lanka, is rich in temples. There are many options to explore in the city, but I'd like to highlight three must-sees:

  • Gangaramaya Temple

Gangaramaya Temple is a fusion of architectural styles - Sinhalese, Indian and Chinese - and a place that combines spirituality with culture. In addition to the temple itself, there is a small museum with interesting Buddhist artifacts. For those who prefer to have a guide explain the history and details, you can book guided tours in Colombo.

  • Seema Malaka Temple

A few minutes from the Gangaramaya is the Seema Malaka Temple, floating gracefully on Lake Beira. Designed by Geoffrey Bawa, it is a haven of serenity perfect for relaxing and capturing incredible photographs.

  • Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque (Red Mosque)

It is one of Colombo's most iconic buildings and was one of the must-see stops during my visit to the city. Located in the busy Pettah area, this mosque stands out for its unique architecture, with red and white bricks that form impressive geometric patterns.

Built in 1908, it combines Indo-Islamic and neo-Gothic styles, making it visually striking. If I had to choose just one of these temples to visit, my recommendation would be this mosque. Although it is an active place of worship for the Muslim community, it is possible to visit it outside of prayer times, as long as you respect the rules of dress and behavior. The atmosphere of the neighborhood where it is located, full of bazaars and local shops, makes this visit even more interesting. It's a place that reflects Colombo's cultural and architectural diversity and is well worth exploring.

2. Visit the Colombo Lotus Tower

A Colombo Lotus Tower is one of Sri Lanka's main attractions, located next to Lake Beira in Colombo. With a height of 356 meters, it offers incredible panoramic views over the city, the Indian Ocean and the green countryside, especially from its observation deck. The tower also has a revolving restaurantThe tower will also feature leisure spaces, shopping areas and a night-time LED light show. The tower's design was inspired by the lotus flower, an important cultural symbol in Sri Lanka, representing purity and renewal. This combination of tradition and innovation reflects the aim of positioning the country as a center of technological and cultural development in the region. You have the chance to make a tour that includes a visit and lunch or dinner in the Tower.

3. National Museum of Sri Lanka: A Dive into the Country's History

Founded in 1877, this neoclassical building stands out in the middle of the city for its grandeur and the richness of what it holds inside. From the moment you enter, you feel like you're about to travel through centuries of history, and the calm atmosphere invites you to take your time. The museum is huge, but there are some pieces and sections that deserve special attention:

  • The Royal Throne of Kandyan: This golden throne is one of the highlights. It belonged to the last king of Sri Lanka and is a work of art in its own right.
  • Buddha statuesThere are statues from different eras and styles, made from materials such as stone and bronze. It's amazing to see how the design changes over the centuries.
  • Artifacts from the Kingdoms of Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa: These ancient objects tell the story of the great kingdoms that marked Sri Lanka.
  • Natural HistoryI was fascinated by the fossils, minerals and even stuffed species that show the country's biodiversity.
  • Colonial heritage: A section dedicated to Portuguese, Dutch and British influence, with objects and documents that help to understand this part of history.

The museum is well organized, with explanations in Sinhalese, Tamil and English. For those who like details, I recommend setting aside at least two hours for the visit. It is located in the center of Colombo, which makes it easy to combine with other sights in the city. Don't forget to stop by the museum store. It has interesting books and souvenirs, great for taking home a special memento. Visiting the National Museum is a good opportunity to gain a better understanding of the country's history.

Lunch: Authentic and Local Flavors

After a spiritual and cultural morning, it's time to taste the city's typical dishes. I recommend it:

  • Old Dutch Hospital: a colonial building converted into a gastronomic center. Try the famous kottu roti or the delicious lamprais.

  • Ministry of Crab: ideal for those who love seafood and want a more sophisticated experience. This restaurant is an icon in Colombo.

Tip: If you prefer an authentic experience, check out the street food options at Pettah Market.

Afternoon: Local Experiences, Shopping and History

Pettah Market

Pettah Market is chaotic, colorful and full of life - a perfect place to immerse yourself in the local culture. Here you'll find spices, fabrics, jewelry and typical sweets. Take the opportunity to buy unique souvenirs. If the chaotic atmosphere is too much for you, then it's best to visit this market in the morning. Located near the Colombo Fort train station, it's a maze of narrow streets. This market is perfect for immersing yourself in the local culture, but you need time and patience to negotiate prices and explore every corner. If you prefer to explore without getting lost, a guided tour of local markets can be an excellent option to make the most of it.

Independence Memorial Hall

Located in Independence Square, it is one of Sri Lanka's most emblematic sites and a tribute to the country's history. It was built to celebrate independence from British rule, achieved in 1948, and its architecture, inspired by the Kandyan style, transports us to the old royal halls.

In the center of the memorial stands a statue of Don Stephen Senanayake, the "Father of the Nation", who played a crucial role in the country's independence. There is also a small museum dedicated to independence, where you can see artifacts and photographs.

Viharamahadevi Park

If you need a break from the hustle and bustle of the city. It is Sri Lanka's oldest park and is full of lush vegetation, pleasant paths and spaces perfect for relaxing or simply enjoying the atmosphere.

The park owes its name to Queen Viharamahadevi, an important figure in Sri Lankan history, and is known for its vast gardens, fountains and the iconic Buddha statue that welcomes you at the entrance. For flower lovers, spring is a special time to visit, when the flowering trees transform the scenery into a spectacle of colors.

Lionel Wendt's house

For art lovers, this cultural center exhibits works by local artists.

Shopping and handicrafts

Take the opportunity to explore the best shopping options:

  • Barefoot: a store offering handmade artisan products such as fabrics, ceramics and unique souvenirs.

  • Colombo City Center: ideal for those who prefer modern shopping centers.

Tip: If you're looking for something more authentic, head back to Pettah Market for fresh spices and little local treasures.

Extra Tip

If you're tired of the hustle and bustle of the city, a good option might be to end the day at Mount Lavinia.

Mount Lavinia

Mount Lavinialocated just a few kilometers from the center of Colombo, is a coastal area known for its golden beaches, relaxed atmosphere and fascinating history. This is one of the most popular destinations for those who want to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and enjoy the serenity of the ocean.

At the heart of Mount Lavinia is the Mount Lavinia HotelThis historic building dates back to the British colonial period. Originally built as the residence of British governor Sir Thomas Maitland, the hotel is famous for its colonial architecture, stunning sea views and the romantic legend associated with the governor and his secret lover, Lavinia.

In addition to the hotel, Mount Lavinia is a great place for those who enjoy quiet beaches and a good dose of gastronomy. There are several restaurants and bars by the sea where you can enjoy typical Sri Lankan dishes, especially fresh seafood. The sunsets here are spectacular, making it the perfect place to relax after a day of adventure and the hustle and bustle of the city.

Fun fact: The romantic legend associated with Mount Lavinia revolves around a story of forbidden love during the British colonial period.

Legend of Mount Lavinia Hotel

Legend has it that at the beginning of the 19th century, Sir Thomas Maitland, then Governor of Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), fell in love with a young mixed-race woman called Lovina Aponsuwa. Lovina was a dancer and the daughter of a local fisherman, and the couple met in secret due to the difference in social classes and the conservative political environment of the time.

To keep their meetings away from prying eyes, Sir Maitland is said to have had a secret tunnel built that connected his residence (today the Mount Lavinia Hotel) to the fishing village, allowing Lovina to come and go without being seen. However, due to social and political pressure, Sir Maitland was eventually transferred out of Ceylon, leaving Lovina behind.

Although the romance ended tragically, the love story became a landmark in the region and it is believed that the name "Mount Lavinia" was inspired by Lovina. Today, the hotel preserves this romantic legacy, and parts of the tunnel can still be seen, adding a touch of mystery and nostalgia to the visit.
